GABRIELLA’S GUIDE TO THE MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES IN LONDON www.travelwithgabriella.com

A few weeks back I wrote about my Ultimate London Itinerary where I shared all the things I want to do, eat and see in London including restaurants, bars and museums as well as landmarks and parks. I love a London museum as much as the next person and wanted to share my guide for the ones that can’t be missed and the ones that have free admission. There are a few galleries in the list, as well as a few really unique museums that I think are worth a visit even though you do have to pay for these ones.

If you’re in London for a visit and want to experience some culture, have a little look at the list below!

British Museum

Open everyday 10:00-17:30

Friday 10:00-20:30

Free Admission

A free one to visit that is open daily, I love the interior of this space, I think it looks incredible. It also has an insane reading room and if you want to pay more you can visit the special exhibitions that they have. Apparently, they also have have over eight million objects. The British Museum has recently been voted the number 1 attraction in London too so definitely worth a visit!

The Serpentine Galleries

Open Tuesday – Sunday 10:00-18:00

Free Admission

The Serpentine Galleries are both in the middle of Kensington Gardens park and are only a five minute walk from each other. The Gallery is a stunning building and is known for showing contemporary art and and modern architecture.

(Throwback to when I had black hair a few years back!)

Natural History Museum

Open everyday 10:00-17:50

Free Admission

Another free entry Museum I love visiting here. There is a whale skeleton in the main atrium at the moment which I love. When they have temporary exhibitions on, they charge but there is still so much to see that is free. I find it really interesting as I love the building itself.

Maddox Gallery

Open everyday 10:00-18:00

Open on Sunday 11:00-17:00

There are four Maddox Galleries in London with another one in Hollywood and Gstaad as well. A higher end gallery, it’s always worth a visit if you’re going past. The Maddox Gallery is known for their hub of influential artists around the world.

Victoria and Albert Museum

Open everyday 10:00-17:45

Friday 10:00-22:00

Free Admission

Known for hosting the most incredible fashion exhibitions (that normally cost), you can actually go into the museum for free. The Christian Dior exhibition is really popular at the moment but it is sold out sadly. There’s still much more to see though, so if you’re interested in Art and Design at all, I’d head there on a trip to London.

The Photographers’ Gallery

Open Monday-Saturday 10:00-18:00

Thursday Lates 17:00-20:00

Sunday 11:00-18:00

Exhibition Day Pass £5.00

On a quiet road turning off from Oxford Street, it’s a welcome break to step into a beautiful space full of interesting photographs. There’s a nice coffee shop too if you need a sit down as well as another beautiful shop on the bottom floor. I always leave wanting at least ten new books! If you love photography it is well worth the day pass as there are a few floors with different exhibitions.

Sir John Soane’s Museum

Open Wednesday-Sunday 10:00-17:00

Free Admission

One of the most interesting museums in London, the Soane Museum is the house that belonged to Sir John Soane. The building itself is incredible and the collections inside are well worth a visit. I love the different rooms and if I was to ever host an event in London, I’d be looking to host in one of the beautiful rooms here. With an aim to inspire, the Soane Museum does just that.

National Portrait Gallery and National Gallery

Open everyday 10:00-18:00

Friday 10:00-21:00

Free Admission

I visited the National Gallery recently and am not going to lie, I would visit here again just for the bookshop. I love a good art book that is full of beautiful imagery. The gallery itself has a lot of portraits from different era’s and their recent photography floors are really interesting too. Well worth a visit especially as it’s free admission again.

The Saatchi Gallery

Open everyday 10:00-18:00

Free Admission

A favourite of mine, The Saatchi gallery always has something really impressive. I love the different levels and room sizes and also the fact that they make use of interactive art. There is going to be a Tutankhamun exhibition in November this year that I would love to go and see so definitely keep your eye on that if you’re interested!

Tate Modern

Open Sunday-Thursday 10:00-18:00

Friday-Saturday 10:00-22:00

Free Admission

I personally think the best thing about the Tate Modern are the events that they host. They have talks, workshops and courses as well as special exhibitions. You can easily lose a whole day there as there is so much to see. They always have free collections to view as well as extra exhibitions and they are always worth the money.

Tate Britain

Open everyday 10:00-18:00

Free admission

Similar to the Tate Modern, there are events and lots of extras to take part in. The Tate Britain is still worth the visit as it is the home of British art from the 1500’s. There are always so many interesting artists to learn more about

The Science Museum

Open everyday 10:00-18:00

Free Admission

An absolutely fabulous day out, I love the science museum. There is so much to see and get involved with. It’s so interactive and I have really fun memories of going with my family when I was younger. I’d happily spend the day there now as an adult and find a lot to do. There’s also an IMAX cinema there but it’s always been just a little bit too pricey for me to experience! If you have young children, they’d definitely love it!
