BOOKS THAT MAKE YOU WANT TO MOVE TO FRANCE

When I was younger I was always fascinated by France. It sounds strange, I know. It’s a place so close to the UK which is where I’m from, but I loved the idea of it. I loved French culture, the language, the fashion and also the beautiful architecture. I did a project on Parisian Couture in University and I loved it. Basically I used to have a bit of an obsession. The idea of moving abroad was always something I wanted in my life. I still have it now, in fact, if someone said to me we’ll arrange for you to move to France, I’d love it. Something that didn’t help with my obsession growing up, was reading about it. I have a few books that once you read, you might find yourself looking at Eurostar tickets too. If you’ve ever wanted to live in France or Paris especially these books are for you!

BOOKS THAT MAKE YOU WANT TO MOVE TO FRANCE

How to be Parisian: Wherever you are by Anne Berest

A book not to be taken too seriously, I love this book. It contains phrases such as “cinematic flair” to describe how to kiss like a Parisian. It’s a story of beauty itself, the book has beautiful photographs, stunning illustrations and witty quotes. The funniest chapter by far, is the Own your bad habits chapter including tips on “How to make him think you have a lover”. I would happily read this book over and over because it’s so fun. I am not under any impression that this book should be taken as advice in any actual life situation as I’m sure many Parisians would be offended by a lot of the behaviour. But, it is still witty and makes me want to head to Paris anyway.

Paris Street Style: A Guide to Effortless Chic by Isabelle Thomas

Filled with streetstyle as the name suggests, this book has all the best interviews with people who are winning the Parisian Street Style game. There are strict fashion rules that may not be your personal style, but there are also useful tips and tricks. For me, I love the interviews that probe the question of French style and elegance.

BOOKS THAT MAKE YOU WANT TO MOVE TO FRANCE

Almost French by Sarah Turnbull

I started reading this book when I was backpacking last year and I loved reading about how someone had moved to a new place while I was constantly moving to new places. This is a travel memoir of Sarah Turnbull who is a journalist from Australia. I fell in love with the idea of moving to France from this book. Sarah becomes so relatable in the book and makes you feel for her as she encounters all the different ups and downs of moving somewhere where you don’t speak the language. I would recommend this to anyone who is moving to a new country.

Parisian Chic City Guide by Ines de la Fressange with Sophie Gachet

I actually took this with me on my last trip to Paris and used it to find things in my local area. It’s organised by arrondissements so you find where you are and everything close to you. It’s a little pocket guide full of restaurant recommendations, places to shop for everything from jewellery to home decor and concept stores. I think it’s a really cute little book and Ines also has a Style guide book which I haven’t had a chance to look at yet.

BOOKS THAT MAKE YOU WANT TO MOVE TO FRANCE

Some other books in my shopping basket that I can’t wait to read are,

Whether you’re interested in French style or French cuisine, the city of Lights has attracted so many people over time and I can see the allure. I will never say no to a trip to Paris and hopefully at one point in my life, I can move there a bit more long-term. What did you think of my selection of books? Do they make you want to move to Paris? I wrote a few weeks back about Books that make me want to travel the world if you want to have a read I’ve linked it here.
